I
am Legend book
by Richard Matheson available from Amazon.com. |
Editorial
Reviews
One of the most influential vampire novels of the 20th century,
I Am Legend regularly appears on the "10 Best" lists
of numerous critical studies of the horror genre. As Richard Matheson's
third novel, it was first marketed as science fiction (for although
written in 1954, the story takes place in a future 1976).
A terrible
plague has decimated the world, and those who were unfortunate
enough to survive have been transformed into blood-thirsty creatures
of the night. Except, that is, for Robert Neville. He alone appears
to be immune to this disease, but the grim irony is that now he
is the outsider.
He is
the legendary monster who must be destroyed because he is different
from everyone else. Employing a stark, almost documentary style,
Richard Matheson was one of the first writers to convince us that
the undead can lurk in a local supermarket freezer as well as
a remote Gothic castle.
His influence
on a generation of bestselling authors--including Stephen King
and Dean Koontz--who first read him in their youth is, well, legendary.

The
Last Man on Earh
is now available on DVD. |
Editorial
Reviews
If you can find it, get a copy of this film. Overlooked in it's
day as a low budget film adaptation of 'I am Legend', Vincent
Price's role is among his best performances. The DVD is availalbe
for as little as one dollar from your local Dollar Stores, or
even Walmart. You can download this film from the Internet archive,
but the verison in the database is an older TV version and is
of poor quality. Go ahead and spring for the $1.00 version.
Based on Richard
Matheson's I AM LEGEND, The Last Man on Earth is about a man who
survives a global plague only to be stalked nightly by zombie-like
vampire victims who call out his name. Vincent Price stars as
Robert Morgan,[not Robert Neville] a scientist who tried desperately
to come up with a cure for an airborne virus that was killing
people around the globe. Although he could not develop a serum
in time to save his family, he himself seems to be immune from
the disease. Thus, he is left to wander the streets by day, staking
zombie-vampires, then barricading himself in his house each night
as these creatures try to break in and kill him. Price is excellent
in the role, going about his horrible business as if it were just
another day: waking up and eating breakfast, putting on a suit,
calmly staking the vampire-zombies, making dinner, listening to
records at night. But when he suddenly sees what looks like another
living soul out in the daylight, his world is suddenly turned
inside out.

The
Omega Man
is available on DVD. |
Editorial Reviews
'I am Legend' was remade once again, this time
as an action film, starring Charlton Heston as Robert Neville.
IMHO, this film version veers off course, after a compelling introduction.
It also removes the whole zombie-vampire theme, adds a Manson-like
'family' cult to the story, and with the hairstyles and hippy-dialog,
the film feels dated now. Many changes were made, and the ending
once again lacks the sort of treatment it should have been given.
Once again,
the story revolves around the last human survivor of a plague
that ravishes mandkind. Turning the living into an army of the
undead, Robert Nevill tries to outwit these sun fearing creatures,
with machine guns, barb wire, fast cars, and grit. The
Omega Man drifts even further from the source material,
and for that, lacks the impact of the book. I kept feeling like
Neville was on safari with the costumes, and the legion of the
undead were light fearing albinos, in some sort of kooky cult.
Heston give the role an interesting interpretation, of a man on
the brink of madness.
Still, a fun
watch, and recommended to any fan of the EOTW genre. Still, the
ending is not what it should have been. The Omega Man
is available on DVD from Amazon.com.

I
Am Legend
is due for release in 2007. |
Editorial
Reviews
'I am Legend' is being remade yet once again.
This time starring Wil Smith and directed by Francis Lawrence.
This film is still in production and is scheduled to be released
in 2007 is the first time a film adaptation has used the name
from the book. Set in modern day New York, not LA, and Robert
Neville this time is not a middle-aged white guy, it will be interesting
to see how close this version is to the book. From what I have
seen, it looks more like a remake of The Omega Man.
