Nearly all of those are coroplast aren't they? I would think the voids in the corrugated plastic spaces would make for very uneven melting of the side not facing the heat source.

If it works tho, besides scooping up the political signs for free, you can get 4x8 sheets online for about 10 bucks if I remember correctly. Custom counter top builders/installers use strips of it to make templates of a job as well, might be able to get scrap or used pieces from them for nothing.

IF the signs are thin, 1mm or less and solid you should be able to use them. If they are 2 sheets of paper with foam in between you can't.

Another idea is to use damaged drop ceiling diffuser panels. I get mine from the local Lowes. It varies, but I usually get a 2'x4' diffuser panel with a cracked corner or chip for $0.25 - 0.75. They form easy enough but are very brittle.

I believe it was drcrash who used for sale signs before in the past as well. Relatively inexpensive, but not free.

Be advised the styrene signs are ok to use, but the paint will cause some weird heat related deforms. The corrigated stuff you can forget it.
