|
|
Well, I've decided to get back into prop making. I've long wanted to see this little design of mine in 3 dimensions. Below is the very first sketch I made of it.
A while back I discovered that this Nerf gun had a strikingly similar grip profile. It just happened to be the Maverick... the model practically every Steampunk enthusiast has repainted to kinda-sorta look Victorian. For the very reason that it has been used so much, I'd never wanted to get one. But, since it has the right grip profile and I'm removing the hokey gattling gun barrels, I decided to take the plunge. (Only $9 shipped, so why not?)
And after a little "Stress Relief" with the hacksaw.
More pictures are to follow. I'll also be making a fancy-shmancy presentation case for it.
I've thought of posting this on the Replica Prop Forum, but seeing as it's my own design, it may not exactly fit their format. |

Hey guys. Well, no updates yet, just some minor contour work. This weekend I'll be building up the forward portion with MDF and Bondo. I've also come across some this sheet aluminum for the barrel shroud. I don't have a drill press, though. Might make drilling the holes a little tricky. Anyhow, it's also getting a broken safety from a 1911, slide release, and magazine release. None of those parts will work, of course, but they will add to the novelty of it. |

Well I've been doing some work re-contouring the grips with Bondo automotive body filler. Yeesh.... I forgot how bad this stuff stinks. Right now it looks a bit like a pink nightmare, but once I've got all that mud sanded down, it will look okay. I'll post pics of the progress so far in the morning, when there is better light for photos. |

Well, I've got most of the grip contour done. I'd like to get the forward part of the frame, but it looks like I'll need a bandsaw to cut it out. So that may have to wait.

Well, a bit of an update. I've finally got the grips sculpted out the way I want them. I've cut out the piece for the front of the gun, so that I can do that bit of sculpting. It's coming along slowly, but carefully.

I've painted the woodgrain on the grips, and after cutting out some more internals, I'll be reassembling the two halves permanently. I'll probably be putting some manner of weight in the grip or filling it with epoxy or Bondo.

Well, I've done some more work on the blaster. I now need to do some filling on the slide and then tackle contouring the front half.

After some help from Jim here is how it looks now. I'm still not completely done, but I'm well on the way.

Looking good! It was fun to work on it with ya. Any decisions on the back end? |

Well, I've decided to take the advice you'd given and add some vertical strips on the back of the slide, to kind of go along with the slide serrations. I'm also pondering adding a little "power meter" on the upper part of the back of the slide. That little cut-out looking part.
Pics will follow shortly. |
