Hello - I just joined TK560 to learn about doing vacuum molding. I have a project that will probably be a one off. Im in the Sf bay area.
Right now Im interested in how to make a mold for 3/16 ABS.
thanks _________________ NewBe |

Hey tekno, welcome to the forum. I use 3/16" ABS for most of what I do. What's your actual project? The vac former has to be near commercial grade to get the heat & vacuum necessary to form plastic that thick. Consider the ProtoForm design talked about in various threads if you're looking to build your own vac former.
All vac forming molds require some "draft" to allow the cooled plastic to release. Basically, no undercuts or 90 degree verticals on normal molds for vac forming. The mold should generally be solid to withstand the intense pressure needed to form the plastic. The mold will also need to be relatively resistant to high heat in the neighborhood of 350 +- degrees F.
