Hi all, new here but keen DIY'er with a workshop full of kit. I'd like to do a little vac forming for a project but need some help with what material to buy in the UK.

I want to make a cone that will be around 300-400mm tall. I want to make it good and strong but I'd also like it to be clear. Could anyone recommend a supplier for the right type of plastic?

Also I was having a look around and see people are making their own heating elements. Is there a tutorial somewhere on making these? I saw a calculator about it.

TIA, I hope I'm not rehashing old questions!

Hi ElChemso
I am in the US, so can't comment on local suppliers. But for plastic, without knowing all the details, I would think PETG. You might consider polycarb, (super strong) but hard to form?
As for the tutorial, best to read a lot on the site (ask questions as needed) and if you really want to get a jump on things you should consider getting the Protoform plans...lots of good information there too.
Here is a link if you are interested;

Best of luck

PETG is the way to go. But all depends on how thick you want the plastic too.

I LOVE PETG.. But there are other possibilities.....

Already mentioned is Lexan (polycarbonate) which is difficult to mold.

Acrylic (perspex) is easier to mold, but subject to much
molded in stresses and may require annealing after forming.

CAB.... Cellulose Acetate Butyrate.... OLD SCHOOL stuff and really easy
to form, cheep too. Might be worth a look.....

Lots of stuff I havent mentioned also...

Scott.
