Greetings everyone. I've been browsing the forum for few days now, quite useful ideas and tips. However, I haven't been able to find any information about joining two vacuum formed ABS sheets, on the web in general (the way I plan... I will explain in detail)
Let me first discuss my setup. I have a CNC router with which I produce the tools for forming. A DIY vacuum machine (quite similar with some of the DIY projects on this forum). I kinda got the basics of vacuum forming, got rid of the webbing problems, thinning, introduced pressure to get the maximum detail... etc etc.
The part where I'm stuck with my project is joining two formed sheets to form one object. I'm quite aware of glues and solvents... but I need to make the parting line as little visible as possible. So making one part smaller than the other and then fitting them together is kinda out of the question. I saw a part where the two formed parts had 45 degree lap joints and most probably were glued together, which results in a barely visible parting line. I want to replicate this technique or any other that will give me similar results. I'm working with 2mm thick ABS plastic sheets.
I don't know how I could explain myself more, if anyone is interested to help I will be glad to provide more information. Thank you in advance. |

Hey Revolucioner, welcome to the forum. Sorry I can't help with joining the two sheets, not something I've done yet.

you can glue the ABS if your careful I use WELDON #16 glue for acrylic.
nasty smelling stuff and if you use to big a glob it'll deform the abs in that spot. ones it dries you have to break the part to Get close to the glue joint.
here's a link (I use the red one but the blue will work but takes 3 or 4 times longer to setup and isn't as strong.
