Just watched 'The Last Man on Earth', starring Vincent Price. Made in 1964, some 10 years after the book 'I am Legend' by Richard Matheson came out. The film is based on the book, and I must say, the $1 DVD I got at the Dollar Store was well worth it! Widescreen, restored, and a good audio track, I was expecting a crappy transfer. Not the case.

The story, has been retold several times, including the 1971 Omega Man version, and is currently under production starring Will Smith. The later film versions deviating from the book verison quite a bit, becoming more of an action film.

IMHO none of the film versions really capture the feel of the book, but LMoE comes pretty close. Some of the scenes in that film are down right creepy, even in Black and White!

This story has inspired a lot of knock-offs, the most famous is George Romero's Night of the Living Dead, where rumor has it, he wanted to make 'I am Legend' but could not secure the rights!

Check it out, if you are a fan of zombie/vampires, fighting mankind!

Those films, and many more are public domain. Funny what shows up in those $1 bins.

Fun stuff.

BTW, Night of the Living Dead is now public Domain, along with Charade, [a restored version is not] and Nosferatu, and My Favorite Brunette!
