Hey guys, new to the forum and thought I should check in.

I'm Ken, a project junkie from Cleveland. A number of projects at the forefront call for expensive parts which are, you guessed it, vacuum formed. I've had the Gingery book for a while but was somewhat unimpressed, and uninspired by it. I'd seen little else on the subject of DIY VF until I found the porn laden hobbyforming.com, which fortunately managed to lead me here.

The sun broke through the clouds!! You are all an inspiration!! I'm now firmly on the path towards building a bitchin' vacuum former, thanks to the awesome work you have all done.

I'm a competent welder and metalworker, and I'm well versed in the mysterious ways of electricity (more than enough for this project). I've also done my fair share of carpentry, so the real challenge should just be engineering.

I intend to build a 48"x48" former, with a high vacuum pump. But I'll start a thread in the proper section with more details on my plan, so ya'll can tear it to shreds, lol.

Thanks guys, I've been reading the forum for 5 days straight and I feel like I already know many of you.

Welcome to the board!

Sounds like you have all the skills to make a great machine. One thing you will want to get is the book The Prop Builder's Molding and Casting Handbook by Thurston James. Even if you are'nt into props, the information contained in that book will really help you get good molds and show you the way to making your vac-former, and to the scale you are wanting.

Keep us updated on your progress.

Hi Ken and welcome to the platen!

I'm also aspiring to build a monster 4x4 table in my garage, but I need to finish the rest of the remodeling work in my house before tackling a new project. So, I'll definitely be following your progress!
