Smooth-on Foam-it 8 product review is up for this tip of the month.

Sometimes you need to cast something, lighter and still rigid enough to machine. There are other options to resin, but here is my take on this issue. Expanding foams are available from the hardware store. 3to1 Expanding insulation foam is one, and there are others. Messy! But it will skin up and be useful for a back filler, to a resin skin coat.

A new product from www.Smooth-On.com is Foam-iT 8. A 2:1 expanding polyurethane, is self skinning for good surface details, has a uniform cell structure, good for all sorts of prop and hobby making.

If you need a resin cast where solid resin would be too heavy or expensive, consider an alternative, a Foam-it 8 might do the trick.

For vacuum forming bucks, this might be an option as well, since the final material is machinable, and should be rigid enough to withstand the pressures for most home vacuum forming machines.

I have plans to duplicate some of my molds with this material, and as soon as I do, expect a full review of this process.

Jim
