You can find HIPS or Styrene as its also called at any plastics supply house. Its a very common plastic used for signage and also I have just seen it being used on a home improvement show as a wall paneling for a basement. It has many uses...and usually comes in black or white...[/i]

I think it is also commonly used for plastic milk cartons, but could be wrong.

The most common milk carton plastic is polyproplene, usually injection molded. Cola bottles are PETG and are heat pressure molded from a cylinder, blown into with heat to form the bottle. Coffee Can lids are polypropolene as well.

Coke bottles are made of PET, I believe, whereas 'PETG' is a modified version of pet(added glycol molecule ?), which we can use more effectively for thermoforming. This is why I was considering whether you could make your own PETG from recycled clear plastic bottles, by adding some sort of polymer. The hard part would be actually making into sheets I guess.

I think oil quarts are HDPE just like the original Stormtrooper helmets Smile
That gives you an idea how flexible the originals were really. Styrene and ABS are much harder than HDPE and tear easliy too! HDPE doesnt hold paint well, but according to the plpastic supply house I go to it can be chemicaly etched to hold paint.

HDPE is something I want to try with my trooper armor. I need a stunt suit, something that can really take a beating. HIPS works fine, and ABS is great, but for what I need, really thin and flexible, HDPE seems the way to go. Anyone try that before?

Thats cool, sadly there is one place within 20 miles that handles sheet plastic. They are a little steep & the last time I got something it was supposed to be .060 & it was .040. Thankfully I have a cool friend with a GE Polymershapes account and a nice new garage with a nice table in it. Wink
