Sure thing Doc!
I'll figure out the cost with shipping (they're big pieces 24" x 32") and let you know through PM.
Here's the tractor trailer:
It's a good thing I was off work that day, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to deliver it!

The best thing to do is to call Andrew at his office.
Andrew Wangman
andrew.wangman@ge.com
301-604-3623
Or you could look for a local GE Polymershapes office and work with their sales staff.
http://www.gepolymershapes.com/polyshapes/PShapes/branchlocator/branchus.jsp
A friend of mine was not able to get any cooperation from his local office, but a call to Andrew got him what he was looking for.
Of course, Andrew won't be in on the 4th of July
Hmm, looks like my Swiss cheese memory forgot to send some ABS to Dr Crash. Will 12" x 18" sheets work for you Paul?

Do you mean 12 x 16? (From splitting 24 x 32 sheets?) Either will work fine, though. (And I haven't been in a hurry, or I'd have bugged you.)
PM me with details.

|
|
Hi,
it looks like you people have trouble with getting smooth ABS ?
This is probably information that you all know already, but a quick search on the forum came up without hits...
When I was playing around with dissolving plastics, I found out that acetone can dissolve ABS. So if you take a piece of rough ABS and apply some acetone with a tissue, it should get smoother.
Be careful to not inhale too much of the acetone vapors! They don't just give you a headache, but they're unhealthy too
Also, ABS shavings mixed with acetone is the same thing as what is called "ABS cement". You can use it to glue 2 pieces of ABS together. |

acetone sounds like fun stuff .
so rubbing a little bit of acetone on haircell ABS will make it.... not hairy?
my question is will the acetone somehow affect the heating process?
i mean, any common chemical mixed with a plastic can be dangerous. _________________ -Alex

the acetone evaporates, so it should be ok.
But I'm no chemical engineer or anything, maybe someone should confirm that |

OK, I tried pulling haircell ABS and for the record......It does NOT work. The texture shows through as a bumpy surface. I did notice on the smaller parts that werent stretched much that the texture was less apparent. So there you go. Save yo money |

you'll never guess what just happened (actually, you might)....
i recieved haircell ABS by complete mistake by my plastic supplier (i'm not sure how they confused HIPS 0.060 in thick with haircell ABS, .125 in thick... ) anyhow, everything is sorted out, will get styrene to vacuform the NEW thighs, forearms, and modified hands this weekend (or so they said...). they said i could keep the ABS as a gift, so i decided to pul some of it.
results? rather poor. since i've never worked with material thicker than 0.080 in think HIPS, i had a tough time just obtaining an airtight seal. i gotta say, that ABS smells just like styrene during the warping stages, and then it transforms into this other smell. a kinda nasty smell.
no propblems heating the stuff, when it's time to form, then i get issues:
1. tough airtight seal (mainly because i'm inexpierenced with 1/8 ABS!)
2. the textue shows through VERY SEVERELY in the hot spots. it looks like the stuff is melting and bubbling!
3. poor detail, once again, thick ABS, so.... yeah.... kinda explains that.
i pulled 2 chest pieces, one was mostly smooth but had some haircell pulled through, the other i failed to obtain an airtight seal. i also attempted the upper back, just to test the degree of detail. i got a poor seal, and the plastic overheated a bit and the texture showed through VERY BADLY. i pulled a second upper back and once again i failed to obtain the airtight seal.
but that stuff is SHI-NEY! really pretty-looking. i i cuold ge this stuff in two 1/6" smooth both sides ABS, then i might just pull some armor. for now, i just wanna get a solid set of armor from styrene, just to say i did it, and to go halloween-ing this year in it! (on the square, of course.)
so that's my review, may post pics soon! _________________ -Alex

That could be cool. I haven't gotten the 12 x 16 pieces from crashmann yet, and I could use some 2' x 2' pieces with my new 2' x 2' platen.
BTW, if you vacuum form textured plastic texture-side-down, that can make it hard to get a good seal. (If your plastic seals directly to the platen edge, the bumpiness interferes with that. If you have a bottom frame that seals to a platen gasket, you can get leakage between the plastic and the top of the bottom frame.) _________________ Paul (a.k.a. Dr. Crash)
