I've tried google, I've tried ProPlastics, I've tried USPlastics, and absolutely NOBODY has high-gloss ABS with NO TEXTURE on EITHER SIDE. I also looked at GE Polymershapes and they don't have ABS, either. I want to try to avoid speacial ordering at ALL COSTS, because speacial orders, for me, never go very well. Does ANYONE know of a site that i can quickly, cheaply, and easily order a 48"x96" of high gloss ABS in a 0.063 inch thickness, with absolutely no texture? Is it even worth trying to form ABS over HIPS? Is there a way to make HIPS shiny like a high-gloss ABS, or just glossy enough to give my stormtrooper armor that much-sought-after glossy finish? i tried car wax, and that sorta worked... a little bit... (it was called turtle wax, or something along those lines...). just a coulpe questions.... Smile

I have had no luck myself finding smooth abs. As far as making HIPS shine...I am jumping that hurdle myself. Jim said that Future floor polish will do the job, i just havent tried it out yet.

I was at the local hardware store, a small outfit called Sutherlands, and guess what they had? ABS, smooth on both sides. No choice of thickness, and this stuff was .093 or .100 but hey, it was used for shower surrounds. 4x8 foot sheet, and was $30.

Never hurts to shop around. Finding ABS in 2x smooth sides is usually a special order.

Future is just liquid acrylic. Used for all sorts of stuff. Test on a small part, and if you dig it, your good to go!

liquid acrylic......
i think i might have used that stuff for refinishing some old furnature (maybe, or at least SOMETHING acrylic)
is it like a varnish, or is it more like a car-wax-type thing?

It comes in a clear quart squirt bottle, and is used to make floors shiny. Works great on props too. pour it on, wipe it down, and let it dry. Note, chrome paint, not so good.

I have some friends who work with Acrylics. I went through him to order my ABS. Gloss white ABS with a smooth texture on both sides was a custom order and had a 500 pound minimum order.

As I recall 500 pounds worked out to be about 30 4'x8' sheets (.090 in. thick), and I was able to have them precut into 2' squares (240 of them).

I was able to save on shipping somewhat as he was able to get it drop shipped along with other orders that he was already doing. Total for everything was $1200 shipped - and it appears to be enough to pull about 10 suits of armor if I don't make too many bad pulls Wink

I have a similar option through a Plastics company realatively local to me. The minimum order is 500 pounds but no guarantee on turn around time as they ned to wait for someone else to fill in the other 500 pounds in order for them to create the run.

1000 pounds minimum and they will produce the run as soon as they receive payment on the next business day - of course. Very Happy

I got mine from GE Polymer shapes. (a while ago)

I had to call them, the funny thing is that once I described what I wanted, he was like "Stormtrooper Armor right?"

LOL

I'm curious as to why this is important to the "Armor crowd" ? I'm trying to picture the inner side and how this affects things.
