Last month, the tip was to wash your resin parts prior to painting. This month, I'd like to mention using a good quality primer. With modern paints, many do wonders with different primers. I have a whole array of different primers for different materials. Here's my main List:
Krylon Sandable or All Purpose Primer: Best stuff for general prop and costume use. Great for all sorts of materials, and was designed to be sanded between coats for a mirror like smooth finish.
Duplicolor's Etching Primer: Great for metal. Regular primer paints will not stick well to metal, but etching primer has an acid in it that will fizz a bit as the paint is applied. Next to a commercial powder coat, this stuff is great.
Krylon Fusion: A new paint designed for plastic, and seems to work great. Has some flex to it and will stick to blow molded and vinyl parts. Use this as a base coat. Top coat colors are limited but more are becoming available all the time.
Plasticote's Spot filler primer: As the name suggests this stuff has some spot putty mixed in, and is great if you need to build up a thicker than normal coat, then sand it down.
As always heed the manufacturer's warning label, use adequate protection, and spray outside or in a well vented area.
Next month I'll talk about baked on spray paints. |

Regarding to what Jim said about "use adequate protection", I save myself a LOT of "clean up time" by wearing nitrile (not latex) surgical/exam gloves when painting or pouring resin/silicon. I have found this type of glove to work the best for me because I still have most of my tactile senses at my fingertips so I can "feel" what I'm touching/holding. I also reduce the chances of absorbing any potential chemicals into my body via my hands, not to mention I don't have to scrub my finger nails and cuticles for 45-minutes when I'm done!
I have an uncle who used to spray insecticides and herbicides back in the early 80's (before they "discovered" personal protection methods), and he has had an auto-immune condition for YEARS where his body attacks itself because of the stuff he absorbed through his skin! _________________ Tony Krewson

Love those nitril gloves!
I should buy some stock in the company that makes them!
