Well, a few of my hunting buddies either have one or are getting the 6.8SPC version of the AR15.
I'm on the fence about it.
I like the idea of a bigger bullet, with a longer effective range, and more knock down, but at the same time the ammo is harder to get and costs more, and these guns require a new bolt and bolt carrier, barrel and magazines.
So far the military has NOT adopted the new round, but some law enforcement groups have.
One former Marine in my hunting group has one, and it is nice!
Stag Arms sells a conversion upper for $575. In this post election climate, thats not too mad a price for a new complete upper.
I'm torn, and broke, so nothing is going to happen any time soon, but I'm trying to get my thoughts together as to what I want to do.
Maybe a 9mm Carbine version? Hmmm... |

Yeah, I believe the 6.8SPC version AR is commonly referred to as a "Grendel"... and the .308 is called a "Panther". When I got re-kindled into being KEENLY interested in firearms again (your fault, Jim... LOL) and decided to build a carbine, I studied the different calibers briefly... the ballistics on the 6.8SPC sure are impressive... almost as good as a .308 in a round just slightly bigger than the .223!! If it were me, I would go with the Grendel over the 9mm if'n you're thinking of a hunting tool.. besides, that's why we already have hi-cap Beretta's!! _________________ Tony Krewson

Thanks Tony, I just needed someone to tell me to go for it! LOL. I agree, with your view of the 9mm, but shooting it, would give me ammo compatibility with ye ole Berettas. LOL.
I've not heard the 6.8SPC called a 'Grendel' before. I thought that was a different caliber. a necked down 7.62x39 [AK] round to 6.5mm, but I'm just starting to learn about these non-standard military stuff.
Cool stuff... decisions, decision, decisions. |

Jim, if you're still contemplating a 6.8SPC.... FYI- I can get 25-rnd. (same size as 5.56 30rnd.) Black Teflon Coated Stainless Steel magazines for $12 each here in Oregon... LMK if you want some, they're going to go fast!! _________________ Tony Krewson

Hey Tony!
I'm still on the fence on the 6.8SPC version, but at $12, that sounds great. Too good to pass up on! Sign me up for 2!

Update:
After getting the magazines [three no less!] from Tony [Thank you again, Tony!] I have made the decision to work up a 6.8SPC.
What do I need to do this? Two ways I see it. One is to just recycle a lower, and work up an upper assembly, bolt, and magazine. The other is a whole new gun, lower and all. I think I will do the first option, at least thats what I will start out doing. Here is my plan:
Find a barrel in 6.8SPC
Find a 6.8 SPC bolt
Use the 6.8 SPC magazines Tony gave me!
Recycle an upper that I already have, OR get a new 'flat-top' and if I go with a short hand guard options, just reuse them, the gas tube, etc. A basic barrel swap is all I need to do!
Get a bolt carrier group. As I understand it, these are in high demand, and are among the harder to find parts. I could just get a bolt, and recycle a bolt carrier assembly, but I prefer having a dedicated bolt for this upper.
Use a lower I already have.
Decide on a barrel length.
Decide on optics. A lot will depend on my upper receiver. If I go with an A2 style, I'm pretty much committing on a non-scoped option, but iron sights are already there. If I go with a flat top, I will have to immediately spring for sights or optics, and we all know how expensive that can be!
Up next really, is to find a procure a barrel and bolt I think. |

Well... all you have to do is do what wives (typically) do to their husbands when coming back from the shoe store. You merely focus on how much you SAVED because it was ON SALE, saving yourself HUNDREDS... and that there is no need for her to thank you for looking out for the family budget by SAVING the family hundreds of dollars, because you love your family and was just doing the right thing by them! _________________ Tony Krewson
