QUESTION:

can't you buy clay at art supply stores like micheal's? (sp?) Confused

how about going the cheaper route, and just buying a lot of play-dough, and sculping with that, while trying to keep it moist? Confused

i'm sculpting a stormtrooper helmet, BTW. Wink

Yes, hobby stores have some clay art supplies but I have found most to be too expensive, or are the wrong type of material.

You can use what ever you want to make your sculpt. The media is up to you. You will spend a lot of time working it, and you don't want to use poor supplies, and have to keep working the medium, not the sculpt. Items like Sculpty are cool, but very expensive. Play-dough is cheap but not very good at retaining it's shape, and will shrink and crack as it dries. Regular porcelain clay is great for holding it's shape, but has to be kept moist. Pottery clay has the same issues, and shrinks about 10-20% as it dries. urethane foams like 'GreatStuff' is too weak to hold up as a vac form mold, but is cheap and easy to work with. Foam-it 8 is much better, and can even be machined. Insulation board can work as a sculpting medium, just look at the thread about the helmet sculpt, and balsafoam is a better option, but is expensive.

Again, it depends on what you want to use. I think this deserves it's own thread in the molding section.

there is a good local clay company in Ohio. If you are looking for something cheapr try the WED EM217. You will have to keep it moist by spraying it from time to time but it will hold up well in the long run.
