i wonder if you could make vacuforming molds out of this stuff, such as a part with a lot of undercuts, like a stormtrooper helmet face, form over that, and release easier, because of its flexible qualities? _________________ -Alex

hmmm, interesting concept...........
i like it. Would the rubber hold its shape during the pull? Surely someone knows the answers?! _________________ "What, you think your some kind of Jedi?" |

Another use for the 'hyperfirm' rubber is engine mounts, and machine tooling pads. I would imagine it would hold up fine for a vac formed mold that had an undercut. I do not know it's heat resistant properties.

Hyperfirm is actually a custom "recipe" that the sci-fire prop makers have themselves. You can try to replicate it, but you wont get it unless you know what they mix or if you accidently discover it through experimentation, but that'd be really expensive _________________

Hyperfirm may in fact be a 'custom mix' but, the SmoothCast 45D is a dead ringer for the same stuff. And the JGreer Concrete Stamping Rubber is darn close, and is already black. |

Well I now have some RECENT news on the Hyperfirm material.. it is NOT what me and Jim thought it was initially. I bought a second hand Hyperfirm (ANH version) E-11 that was pretty "ugly" on the outside... sloppy paint-job and weathering... excess glue-bead remnants, etc.
I have drilled into it as I'm improving it to look more like the screen used thing... anyway it's a self-skinning, VERY dense foam that is black in color. The outer skin is about 1/8" thick, then its the foam stuff. It also has a carbon fiber rod running down it's length, and a metal piece that runs down the length just above the folding stock, I believe they are using that to fix the rigid wire they are using as the armature for the trigger guard. _________________ Tony Krewson

Good info Tony! Thanks for sharing. That starts to REALLY sound like Smooth-on's Flex-FoamiT 25. |

if you're done with that i'd be interested in it.... maybe i can touch it up, and make it into a decent-looking prop!
let me know! _________________ -Alex

Aww shoot!! I forgot to post some photos of that HF E-11 re-work I did...
1. I drilled out the end vent holes on the barrel and installed my own rubber T-tracks and tucked them into the holes... better than the original "glued on popsicle stick" looking T-tracks.
2. I ground off the (too short) subby magazine, hollowed out the mag-well, made a rubber cast of the Sterling Mag I have and stuffed that into the mag-well.
3. I hollowed out the solid cast front sight guard.
4. Added my own more accurate power cyliders (casted in rubber),
5. Casted my own rubber M38 scope (I'm not a fan of the M19 on E-11's)
6. Replaced the inaccurate "glued-on" scope rail, and installed an aluminum scope rail.
7. Installed a metal D-ring (shaped on a REAL Sterling D-ring) on the rear end cap.
8. Re-shaped the trigger guard from the "squished look", to the proper "more rounded" shape.
SOOOOoooooo....... here youse all go!
HF ANH E-11 (reworked):
This is my "tricked out" MR E-11 (for comparison) that I picked up a couple years ago... SWEET, but HEAVY!!
More shots of the HF E-11(reworked):
A stock HF E-11 for you to compare the differences:

WOW! Nice! Great Job! Good info on the 'Hyperfirm'. So basically this stuff is NOT rubber, but a foam? I've not had the chance to examine one's internals, just holding one, it seemed more like the rubber from JGreer. Very interesting. I may know what they used then... More research. |
