Tinkerer, hobbyist, and overall geek, I work on retail computers and restore arcade games in the sidetime. And make strange things.

At this point I'm working on two things that seem to be pointing me towards vaccum forming (or one-off stunt with heat gun, template and sheet )

Since the real thing is $$$, and I had a old casing that seemed to fit,
I've been building one of these. 1/3 scale, approx.

What is it? a 1/3 scale Atari Star Wars. Because it's fun.

So the roadblock at this point is reproducing a reasonable facsimile of

From what I've been studying from lurking around the postings, it looks like this might be past the skills of the unskilled Embarassed

Or not?

By the way, anyone wanting to reproduce the real thing, I can get hold of one for you to copy. Please do. There are lots of cracked bezels out there.
This scaled thing is a one-off, so I don't need to make multiples.. and I
have to correct for the different proportions of my scaled one..

Anyhow, I'd appreciate insight into what materials or method I should pursue in regards to the bezel..

Then final, omg step: the yoke.

But that's a topic for another post, eh?

Welcome to the board.

Interesting project. Question, do you have a 1:1 version to work from?

Thanks..

I don't have a bezel personally, but can borrow one within a week if need be.
That stuff's made of unobtanium and priced accordingly.

This has entirely been working from photographs and scaling repro art to scale,
fudging a bit here and there, but ideally, it will be an optical illusion prop..

By the way, the bezel is for a 19" CRT, so that might give you an idea of the scale of the original.

I guess with mine I need to just make the thing out of wood/bondo/??
since I'd have to do that anyway to make a mold, and then decide whether to just finish that out and be happy.

I'm not making copies, after all it's going to be flawed from design, being 1/3 scale, not very playable Rolling Eyes

But then again, I think I crossed that line of practicality already.

Also, in regards to the full-scale one:

The alternative I've been thinking about, is taking their whole piece,
figuring out some good seam points and making it a multi-piece assembly.

That would overcome most of the size issues, yes?

It just seems like the larger-scale an item to be done, the bigger the table/vaccum/cost/skill requirement is going to be..

I figure if anyone knows how to make a bunch of Star Wars themed plastic work together in an assembly, it'd be here Smile

If you are not planning on making more than one or two, it would hardly be worth making the molds to vacuum form, but if you want to make say 3 or more, it might be worth it. Either way, your would make the molds from wood.

Yeah, it's a one-off for the scaled version. The basis was a flight console from a news helicopter. Not much chance of repeat.

Time to work on them whittlin' skills Smile

I've got a few experiments to go in regards to 'conventional' materials.

meanwhile, a friend just sent me this link today.. ye gads.

1/4 scale Bell Helicopters, 3 of them at a time..

Sorry to go OT on my own thread, but whoa.
