Hey Gang. I figured I'd start up a thread on one of my favorite sci-fi flicks, Outland. Sure, it's no Alien or Blade Runner, but I always found the idea of what is essentially a western or cop movie in space to be pretty cool. In the movie, the police all use sawed-off semi-auto shotguns. The idea was that the pellets were less likely to puncture the hull, I guess.

They seem to use 2 different models of shotguns. For most shots, and indeed all of the times they are being fired, they are using sawed-off Remington 1100s. The police have ones that are pretty bare, nothing added to them, but the hitmen at the end have some bizarro scopes attached. I've no idea if these were some kind of real scope off of an armored vehicle, or were built from a real scope, of just something the prop department put together. In a couple of close-up scenes, what appears to be a Browning Double Auto or Twelvette is used. I'd assume they used it because of its unusual left-side loading gate. They also have several dummy Remingtons used as filler in the gun racks.

Eventually, I intend to go about getting the appropriate license and tax stamp to own a sawed-off and I'd like to build one of their standard ones, made from the Remington.

Alright, time for some pics.

If I can get some good pics of the Remingtons, I'll add them too.

After some looking, it occurs to me that the Remingtons might be model 11-87s. These look essentially like the 1100 except for the charging handle and their lack of the 1100s engraving and fancy stock work. It also appears that the 11-87 may be cheaper to find used.

And after looking at the expense of the transfer fee and the fact that I'd have to pay a class 3 manufacturer to do the barrel shortening, I've opted out of having a firing version. I may just buy one to hunt with and use it as reference for making a non-firing prop...

And it would appear that there is yet another possibility for the hero shotguns; the older Remington 11-48. All these guns are virtually identical in appearance, except for the 1100's engraving. I can find an 11-48 for a relatively low price too, so that may be my route to owning an almost-Outland shotgun. I'll just make sure to get 2 barrels and stocks, so I can have a good fowling piece and can convert it into a good house or truck gun (if I had a truck...).

I watch this over the weekend. Seems to me you can get away with any of the 1100 series shot guns. I did notice, you never saw more than two or three shots at a time... I wonder if that was a limitation to the prop gun?

Well, the grand total for the magazine in that model would be 5 shots; 4 in the mag and one in the chamber, I believe.

I've located me a cheap 11-48 and it aught to be arriving any day now. It has the proper ribbed barrel, which has been shortened to 20", so the collector's value is gone, making it a prime candidate for chopping off another about 1 3/4". That will put it just over legal length and it will still look almost just like those in the film. I'll also snag me a couple of other barrels and a second stock as time goes by, to put it into other configurations.

And here's a screenshot of Connery cutting loose a round with one.

Well, I've received mine but have yet to fire it off. From what I've read, the recoil operated 11-48/11-87 series are supposed to be pretty stiff. The gas operated 1100s they used in the movie would kick less.

And here it is in all it's filthy, powder residue and cosmoline packed, pre-cleanup grooviness.

Hey Clint!

I can't really tell from that pic, but are the hand guards the same? It would be interesting to shoot a pic similar to the screen grabs. I'd be curious if the shell lift gate thing is the same.

Let us know how it shoots!

Jim

Well, the handguards are shaped the same, but the checkering pattern may be different. That's just one of those things that happens when you get away from the original screen-used model. The shell lift-gate looks just like the one in the screengrab of the Remington next to all the resin or wooden stunt guns.

It actually shoots really well and doesn't kick like everyone had claimed. That may be the effect of the Cutts compensator, there. Since it's a long-stroke recoil-operated action, it's rather slow compared to more modern guns. You can really feel that recoiling barrel moving back and forth. It also spits the shells out almost right at your feet, making them a bit easier to collect. After a thorough cleaning, I fired it from the shoulder and from the hip into a berm, and had no malfunctions.

Not bad at all for a $160 gun.

Well, after a long time, I've decided to revisit this project idea with a fresh viewpoint. It would seem that all my previous assumptions were wrong. I re-watched the movie and noticed, in several scenes, a distinctive humpbacked receiver. It was pretty visible, but not as pronounced as that on a Remington 11 or Browning A5. After some research I determined it was the Browning 2000. The Browning 2000 was a based largely on the Browning Double Auto, hence the side-mounted loading gate seen so prominently in the loading sequences. This does mean my Remington will never be really be the movie gun, but it is still a handy shotgun and I needed a reliable 12 gauge anyway.

Below we see a comparison between the Double Auto and the 2000. Below that is a screencap of Marshal O'Neil carrying one.

Below is a shot showing the smooth, shiny cartridge lifter as seen in the pic of the one in the gun rack.

Also there is a thread on the RPF discussing the Outland badge (got one, by the way Smile ) in which a remake of the Outland shotguns is shown.
