Stumbled on this today when searching for cheaper parts for my machine:

http://www.duralite.com/store/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=108

I noticed the material listed is Kanthal, not Nichrome. I've come across this in a few other places as well:
http://www.heatersplus.com/wire.htm
http://www.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=2073630

The advantage that I'm most interested in is it's electrical performance, especially at 115V.

The chart would lead me to believe that at 115V, 15 Amps, this can push a significant amount of heat, and according to the third site, will last up to 3 times longer than nichrome. The price also seems reasonable. They also seem to sell 6ft sections of Nichrome coil as well.

Second noteworthy item were the quartz tubing options for insulating Nichrome and Kanthal. They indicate that it helps to protect the heating coils from shock, debris, and provide electrical insulation for the user.

It would appear there *may* be some useful info out there from hobbyist kiln makers, and at home pottery enthusiasts, that want to run a kiln/furnace from standard house currents.

Not sure if this is the right section or not for this info, but I didn't want to keep it to myself. Anyone have any experience with these materials? I'm curious. What do you think?

I have no experience with that stuff, but sounds interesting.
