|
|
Has anyone ever know of a design using gauze (heavy wire mesh) as a heating element.
I have access to Kanthal gauze at work, and it would be nice to utalize this material in a heater design. Especially since it wouldn't cost me a dime. Kanthal is also more durable than Nichrome-60 for the use of heating elements.
If anyone has any info, please let me know... _________________

This stuff that looks like window screen mesh? I haven't heard of anyone using it for their oven (on this board).

I didn't think it would be possible to turn that into an electrical conductor because of the mesh pattern. All those paths from hot to neutral yikes!
How would you wire it up? Hot on one corner, and neutral on the diagonally opposite corner?

I didn't think it would be possible, but it was worth a shot to ask. We use it at my work to layer inbetween platinum gauze to make large gauze pads that is used as a catalysts in the fertilyzer industry. We have drums full of excess Kanthal that gets scrapped out.
It would be a little scary to wire up... _________________

Ouch, just thinking about it hurts. I would think you would need a controller to do it, just putting hot on one corner and return on the other would have the current go straight across.
You might tie all of the "bottom" together and then the "top", and power it that way, but the current draw would be steep. _________________ Never force anything, always get the bigger hammer. |

Just happened across this forum....
Have been wondering the same thing about mesh being used as a heating element...
Called these guys, Belleville Wire Cloth in Cedar Grove, NJ
http://www.bwire.com/
They sell and make both Nichrome and Kanthal wire cloth and wire mesh and they say they have sold these materials to several companies that were looking for this mesh as a heating element. So, in talking to the people who actually make this material, this mesh can be used as a heating element. |

I'm no electrician, but even to me that sounds extremely dangerous. |
