Outstanding Resource Site!! Thanks!
I just have a couple of quick questions....
How tall do you make your risers do you just use the 1" mdf board for the
risers?
Also, what is the grey that you painted on the wood ?
Is that some sort of release chemical?
thanks!!! _________________ -Cleanse and Burn |

Thanks for the compliments
As for the spacers, let's call them 'risers', and they need to be tall
enough to avoid any of the 'mold' from being lost as the plastic
reaches the forming platen. There is a 3/4 inch curve at the base of a mold, where you may still have some desired detail. Using the risers, raises the mold abouve the forming platen just enough to avoid the curve. don't make the risers too tall. The taller the pull mold the thinner the material.
The gray paint, is common Krylon sandable primer. Sometimes I used a spot filler primer, but not that much. Be sure the paint you use is sandable. |

I watched your short of the fan film you are making, that looks like some fun! What state are you in? If you don't mind me asking. _________________ -Cleanse and Burn |

I couldn't be further away. lol
I am in central Michigan. I was only asking because I thought it might be kind of neat to check you all out while you were shooting..... Anyway, I started on my first mold yesterday, I decided to start with the chest piece, working off the measurements in your download, I am a little larger then so I have added just a little to it. So far it is coming along pretty good, it is definatly going to take me a while to get it right. my biggest draw is not having done any vacuformting before I am not sure how the plastic is going to cover, or "tent" at the edges. I will hopefully get the risers correct when it comes to that...
Thanks. _________________ -Cleanse and Burn |

The fan film is a fun, but slow process. Each shot has to be planned out, rehearsed with the actors, calculated where to shoot, make the set pieces, find locations to film in, and make the costumes. I love it!
As for the vac forming, give it a try. If the mold does not form like you want, just keep refining the mold until it looks the way you want. The plastic will get all sorts of detail you don't expect, so be ready to do lots of sanding. |
