Hey everybody!

New to the forums. My name is Kris and I live in Red Deer,
Alberta Canada.

I'm interested in learning how to mold/cast and would like to eventually
make my own vacu-former.

I'm currently building an R2-D2, it's going to be mainly aluminum parts.
My other interests is in movie props. Ya I'd love to make a trooper
outfit someday, but I don't think the empire is ready for a fat trooper.
Wink

Things I'm interested in making are molds/casts of my real steel
firearms, then modify the into sci-fi style guns. Just keeping an
open mind and trying new things out. lol

Hope to learn a bunch from the forums here.

Cheers!

Welcome to the board.

Sounds like you are into many of the same things a lot of the other board members are into. Cool!

Tell us more about your R2 project. Thats something I'd like to try one of these days.

Just started on my R2 in December '07.

I'm currently gathering parts, I'm aiming for mainly aluminum
external parts. I'll be attempting to build the frame and legs myself.
I enjoy the electronics side of things probably the most of all.
Hopefully everything will go good. I'm hoping to be done by early '09.

Once he's complete I may try vacu-forming/mold/casting some
of his parts to build a 2nd static version for my theater room.

So many things on the go, so little time... lol

I can definately help with that, as long as you don't mind disassembling your firearms to clean all the bits of mold rubber out of them :p. I made a mold of a gas blowback airsoft handgun with very successful results, and after some disassembly and cleaning, the original gun's in working condition again, and I can make as many replica copies as I want. The type of mold rubber and how much you use depends on the level of detail you want. Were you planning on making handgun replicas, or something larger?

No problem on the cleaning side of things. I've been reading up on
making 2 part molds. I'm thinking I'll have to use molding clay to
fill gaps/barrel/mag wells/ect as well for creating the part line.

I'm thinking of doing a quick silicone rubber mold first, cast it in resin,
then tweak the cast (remove serial #'s, ect) and re-mold for a master?
Or is there an easier way? I'm new to all this.

Ultimately I want replicas to start, then I want to get into making
custom sci-fi guns using the replicas as a foundation for some crazy
creations. lol

Also been researching on building a vacu-former for the work bench.
Nothing huge, maybe just 18"x18" sheets. Vacuum side looks easy,
I'm worried about burning down the garage with a home built heater
assembly. I can see the headlines 'Geek burns down garage making
Darth Vader costume!'... lol

Usually you will want to work off the master, and if you have any ID tags or numbers, fill them in with Kleen-Klay. This is a silicone safe wax based clay that is used for tweaking the master pattern prior to silicone mold making. I do this for the Sterling L2A3 parts.

BTW Here is a shot of the www.sci-fire.com Lewis Gun mold:

Note the tan color material. Thats Kleen-Klay tweaking the master.
