Jim mentioned this in another thread, so I thought I would start a new one on the subject.
Quote: | I think Paul has a neat product, a hot cast reusable plastic that he carves up, uses as a mold, then takes the scraps, remelts, and reuses. Don't know what it's called, and I don't think it's available by the same brand name in the US, but cool stuff none the less. |
I found this web site:
http://www.submarineboat.com/sub/foundry.html Look twards the bottom of the page under lost wax casting.
In a nut shell this is what he has to say:
Quote: | I am certain it will depend on the actual type of polyethylene plastic you use, but a mixture of 4 parts wax and 1 part plastic by weight was enough to raise the melting point by 80 degrees and make a much harder material from the wax. Perhaps not true "Machinable Wax" but better named "Plastic-Wax" |
Here is a picture of him machining a part out of his homemade Plastic/wax.

Say, thats some pretty nifty home brew listed on that link. I may have to try that.
The stuff I was referring to was mentioned by Paul in the UK as he used it on his stormtrooper armor molds. Paul, do you have a brand name for that stuff? I don't think it's available here in the US. I don't know if the machine wax is heat resistant enough for vacuum forming, but sure would be fun to try out.
